How To Create An Interior Design Mood Board

We went through why you need a mood board a few weeks back when I wrote the post about what you need before buying furniture or choosing paint colours. If you haven’t read it yet, you can read it here.

Today, I will help you create a mood board for your next project. For now, just choose a room that you are thinking of redesigning or would love to redesign and work through these steps to create your own interior design mood board. Just a note, there are lots f different ways to do this. My way isn’t any better than anyone else’s its just the way I do it.

1. Imagine – Choose images that you like or that inspire you and don’t limit yourself with practicality or cost – yet.

For this first section, you just need to do a lot of looking and collecting of images, colours, furniture, fabrics anything to help you say yes, I like this and I would like to use this idea or this piece of something for inspiration. Usually, you will end up with lots of pics from magazines, or maybe you already have a collection of things that you have been saving for “one day”. Get it out now and look through the images to see if you still like them. Don’t put limits on this. Just pick everything and anything you like. I would search for at least 10 pictures, items or anything to just put into the “I like it” pile.

2. Get an Idea – Aim to have one strong and clear goal or idea.

Chose one main image that really depicts as well as possible what you are trying to do. Write ten things about that room that you like about it. Do you like the colours? Do you like the way it feels? Why? Do you like the brightness, what about the furniture, textures, patterns, style, mood, decorations, vignettes, flowers, coffee table? Write as many things that you can, the more you write and understand what you like about the room, the easier it will be to edit later on. Now describe your idea in one sentence.

3. Filter – Keep only the best.

Now think about your room or project and look through the images that you have found. Keep to one side the ones that you really love and or you feel would really work for the space. If you chose inspiration items rather than pictures like feathers or materials, keep the items with the ideas that you want to use in this space specifically.

4. Get Creative – Think of everything.

You will need to think about the colours, walls, floor, ceiling, doors, window dressings, furniture, fabrics, décor and even ironmongery. Look at the room you are sitting in now and name all of the things that are in it. Vases, types of flowers, think of everything. You may not use it, but consider everything from the type of stitching on the occasional chair to the type of pull chord on the roller blinds. Try and find an image or a real-life example of the ideas you have. I would always order samples. Go into paint, tile, wallpaper, carpet or a fabric shop and ask for some samples. Even just to get ideas for texture or colours.

5. Get Realistic – But don’t discard the things you truly wish you could use just yet.

What could you realistically afford to use. If you really like something that is really out of your price range, keep it and see how important it is to the scheme. If it has to be there, search and search until you find something similar within your price range.

6. Edit – Stay focussed on your desired goal from step 2.

Ask yourself what will help achieve the mood or feeling of the room I am hoping to create? This can be really tough and its why many ammeters designs fail! Be strong. Only keep what is the idea for this room. You can always use that idea somewhere else (I used to get this all the time!) Go back now to your idea – does what you see coming together give you that feeling or do you feel like you are reaching your goal? Keep going removing and or adding textures, furniture and items until what you see in front of you with your materials, fabrics, ideas, furniture and inspiration reveals what your space is going to look and feel like and is being expressed in what you have chosen.

 7. Test your ideas – Imagine these things in your physical space.

Items that are to be on the walls, you need to hang on the walls! Items that you are going to purchase in terms of furniture, you need to draw them out on the floor and see if they will fit. Get samples, get as much information as you can about everything you plan on using. Test, test, test.  Pretend the furniture is there and walk around it.  Imagine something on the wall where you want it, how will it fit, what will the light do with it?

8. Make Your Decision – … Stick it Down

But All of this would have been in vain unless you actually use your board and stick with it.  Look at the work you put into getting to this point.  If you follow this to a tea, you will realise your vision.

That is the strength and power of the interior designer’s mood board (architects use them too!) Now you have a mood board that you can trust will achieve your end goal. Let me know if this helped you?

The Biggest Mistake You Are Making With Your Home (and The Easiest Way To Fix It)

So here it is. I see it all the time. The homemakers, designers, professionals – everyone, unless they have a clear vision of the end result and what they want it to look like, they fail in reaching their end goal with their design.

I see this every day, working with architects, designers, clients, builders, artists and whilst giving design advice. It makes sense though, that without having a clear vision of the end result, you are kind of just playing around, which is fine if you have lots of money to spend on buying things that aren’t going to work, testing ideas and have lots of time to make those mistakes. The main reason that drawings, collaging or sketching your ideas is so important in reaching a look you want is because you are filtering while you are doing it and if you actually go one step further to define what it is that you like about a photo then you are really getting closer to understanding what it is that you really want.

So try it! It is January and you have probably already set some goals for health, family, study etc. Why not have a vision for how you would like your house to look by the end of this year? And this should be fun! Here are two exercises you can start right now to ensure your home will look exactly the way you wish it would, down to the pillowcases on the bed and the flowers in the vase.

Steps to Make Sure Your Home Looks The Way You Want It Too.

  1. Use an online image source. I use Houzz, Pinterest, Polyvore and In the Window.  I find this the fastest (and cheapest way), but you can collage form magazines if you like too!
  2. Create a vision board for your home. If you would like a workbook on how to do this stay tuned and next week I will have one here for you. For now, go get some magazines, sing up to Pinterest or start saving images to a folder on your computer of Houses that inspire you and keep them for later. Next week I will show you the first step to filtering your ideas in order to make a vision board for your home.

The one in today’s image was an idea/vision board for my bedroom/study/dressing room/library in my London apartment.  You can see underneath I started to write what it is about the image that I liked.  Have fun with it, don’t take it too seriously and enjoy the creative process.

An Interior Colour Combination That Just Works

In architectural offices I have heard really basic things like “I know how to use colour, I did go to kindergarten”. What people say and what they do however is very different, because what I see in designs all around me is the lack of confidence and knowledge to use colour successfully or in a really satisfying way.

With today’s post I just wanted to give you a few different pallets as a go-to guide, so that you can bookmark this page and come back to it when you are choosing colours for a project and dare to do something a little bit different.

So I will start with a typical Monochrome Interior.  Yes, as the name suggests we use only one varying colour. Typically we think of Scandinavian style interiors which are known for confidently using black and white with shades of grey or white on white on white or different shades of timber on white.

Let’s see what you can take away from this when it comes to colour? Whether you are drawn to this type of look or not, there is a good design lesson here! If you are considering decorating and you just want to keep the walls white or predominantly white, (like many homes here in the UK, besides developer magnolia), you can still introduce a colour scheme that is beautiful – even if your home isn’t an architectural gem. What is the end result you are looking for?

INTERIOR DESIGNER’S BUSINESS SCHOOL

Let’s say you are looking for a bright, Scandinavian style, which is predominantly monochrome but want some textural and natural materials. If all the whites are the same – you can use any colour of timber to highlight your space, as long as they are in the same tones. Imagine the white walls as a canvas and backdrop (check the blog image at the top as an example).

I’m only speaking about colour here, one of the reasons why this interior also works is because there is lots of texture in the white elements that creates different shades of white and grey due to the shadows, but that is for another discussion!

Lets now say that you have been living with this style of interior and want a bit of a change and would like to introduce a new element into the design. If we use the same principles of only adding one more colour or tone here is the result:

scandinavian-style-living-roomSo here, a blue-grey has been added in different shades and tones. Can you see that it still works? The success here is that large amounts of the grey/blue were added and so again, that is another discussion we can have on the percentages of colour required in a room in order for the colour to look right!

Focus Jo… I know I get a bit too excited about this stuff, so now, let’s say that this is still looking a little too monochrome for you and after living with it for a while you just want some splashes of colour.

colours-interiorsBoth dark or light tones will work! Both cold and warm tones will work!

Try adding one colour at a time and see how much of it the room can “handle” – this doesn’t vary by rules – it varies by personality. After doing this work for almost 2 decades, I know that there are different personalities and some believe that pastel pink is a bold splash of colour and others believe that a whole room painted in gold and purple stripes is a bold splash of colour. Isn’t this fun?

Home Office Interior Design – Step 7

STEP 7 – TIE IT TOGETHER WITH A STORY

I hope you are starting to really get a picture of your space and your room is coming together.

Step 6 was about your personality and giving soul to your space.

Step 7 is the last step of this course and I’m going to give away my decorating secrets that help you put everything together and also, get it right… every time!

The first thing to remember about any design project is to imagine the larger whole and then focus on the details but ALWAYS ensure the decisions you make refer to the larger idea.

This might sound a little outrageous (or not), but simply put, if I wanted a clean, minimal, bright and contemporary space – I would chose colours that inspired me, but probably wouldn’t purchase open shelving to display my crystal collection (well not unless it looked like a piece of art…

  1. The easiest way to tie your room together as a whole is to unify something… anything… just unify 1 thing and make it obvious. For Example, you might have lots of bright colours that show off your eclectic and arty style, but you have one colour that is repeated constantly that ties it all together and makes it look whole.
  2. Now without too many Big Lebowski Quotes coming up the main things interior designers use to tie a room together are: colour, a rug, a central painting, collectables and fabrics. If in doubt, just test your ideas, swap one item at a time and take a photograph so that you can see your room as though someone else is looking at it.
  3. You might of heard about layering. This is the main way interior designers tie a room together to tell a story. You can tell a story about you and how far you have come, you can tell a story about the season, a point A to B. Just think about any really great story, there is also a bit of drama. Ask yourself what is the story in this room and ask someone else what they see as the story too.
  4. And Finally, how to Feng Shui your office for success. You might be wondering why I put this last in the challenge? Well It comes down to what you believe… If you believe that you must put your desk in the north Eastern corner to gain success then that is what you must do. If you believe that having a lucky crimson bird in the South is the anchor you need to know you are on a path to success, then that will work too. It comes down to whether you believe you are attracting success or not. I don’t hinder myself with superstition, but I do believe that anchoring in certain things helps remind you each day what you are working towards. I also like to use Feng Shui for “styling”. I like the practical aspects such as using mirrors to deflect unwanted flows of energy, but that is for another challenge!

I believe Feng Shui is a practical tool as well as a fantastic way to anchor in your desires. “It always seems impossible until its done”  Nelson Mandella.

Home Office Interior Design – Step 6

Step 6 – Show-off Your Personality & Style

Step 5 was about defining a theme and mood because these give you a tool to filter out the items you don’t need to buy, show or even include in your home office space.

This is where we are going to talk about you!

Domestic interior design wouldn’t exist if there were no people willing to express their personality and style. What do you like or what are drawn to and what sets you apart from others?

Are you drawn to beautiful photographs?  Do you like hot pink or are you a sucker for gorgeous sculptural plants?

Whatever floats your boat, embrace it, because the only person who needs to enjoy this space is you.

Here are my tips on how to personalise your home office and give it some heart:

  1. Stand back and ask yourself, what in this room is missing a bit of me? Is the wall colour too murky or could the curtains have more zig zag?  This is where you accept that you love tribal art or that actually you need way more black than white.  What colours light you up, inspire you and bring you joy and why haven’t you included them?  There is no point in creating a gorgeous minimalist grey and white interior, when you have a colourful personality that is energized by colour.  Accept who you are and don’t be afraid to include your personality into your design, this is what makes it real.
  2. Now that you have thought about the overall room, what about the smaller items?  Do you like to collect quotes?  How about displaying them in a way that is very you?  If you aren’t confident with expressing too much of your own personality yet, start with smaller items, such as picture frames, rugs, pot plants, crystals or cushions.
  3. This is my favourite!  Use what you already have… Instinctively we collect items that we like, a piece of paper that you picked up from your travels, a gift that means so much to you, a photo of someone you love.  These things define you, so don’t be afraid to use them.  If the photo needs to be reprinted, however, because it’s faded or needs a new way of being displayed, then now is the time to do it.  Look around at the things you have collected, make them special again and use them to be inspired and show off your personality.

Did you realise how important you are in this process?  Make sure you write down at least 5 things that define your personality or style.

Home Office Interior Design – Step 5

DEFINE YOUR THEME & MOOD, THEY ARE THE KEY TO ALL OF YOUR DECISIONS

I always feel like I am up-levelling my life and business by anchoring in my success every time I do something to my home office.

Step 4 is about choosing furniture that makes you want to use it and items you love that are incorporated as investments rather than just another flippant purchase.

Step 5 is about digging a little bit deeper into the hidden secrets of decorating.

One of the questions I get asked by people as an architectural designer is “how do I know what items to buy?”

The first main step to decorating, now that you understand your space, limitations, budget and have a vision, you need to have a….wait for it…

THEME

What? Like for a party, play or movie? Yep!  The key to success with decorating is to have a theme and until you understand the key elements of the existing themes in design, interiors and decor, I would usually stick with one of the existing ones before getting so outlandish that you create a theme that no-one understands or appreciates. You might be at the stage where you are confident with themes, but may need some guidance on what they are and how to achieve them more confidently.

A theme is also a style. So choosing your “theme” is also confirming and making a decision on what style you are going to design this room in.

Because you now have a lot of information about your room, its boundaries, limitations and opportunities, you are ready to decide on your own style.

INTERIOR DESIGNER’S BUSINESS SCHOOL

FAST TRACK YOUR CAREER & LEARN EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO START YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN BUSINESS

So here are my decorating secrets:

  1. Decide on your theme (style) for your home office. To start off with, list whether you are drawn to any of the following styles: Rustic, country, modern, colonial, industrial, mid century modern, British Colonial, minimalist, contemporary, traditional, art deco, south western, Shabby chic, Asian, Hamptons, Moroccan, Spanish, French, Victorian, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Tuscan, Shaker, Scandinavian, Classical, Italian, Rococo, Baroque, European Traditional, eclectic, transitional… you get my point? Search images and collect ones that inspire you. Try to figure out which theme they are, then decide on the style you want to decorate your room.
  2. Once you have a collection of images that represent your style, try to see which elements in those images will work with the space you have for your home office. For example, lets say your style is Country and you have found a few different images that all have some kind of country feel. (Don’t get hung up on whether you are french country , country cottage, Scottish country, or alpine country just yet). Write down what makes it look or feel “country” to you. Is it the curtain material, the exposed beams, colours or the patterns and items associated with the country in the pictures (or is it just the view out the window?)
  3. Now this next part won’t be so difficult that you have a guide, because with a list of crucial elements you can work on bringing your theme into your home office. Start collecting materials and colour samples, timber finishes, fabrics, and relate them back to your theme as well as to each other. The only final element you need to really consider here is the overall mood you want to create, because you can have a cosy country feel or a bright country feel or even a fresh and healthy country feel. So whilst putting together your theme, think of the mood you want to create and create a “mood” board to help you to purchase the right items and use this to make decisions when purchasing items.

To be honest in almost 20 years working with design, art and architecture, I know of a million different ways to start designing a room and for most, this technique I just shared with you, is usually the best way to get a great end result, even without any design knowledge or talent.

Designers are always referencing the past and being inspired by nature, culture, travel, art… The best way to develop this skill within yourself is to start by looking at what others have already done and learning from their success.

Home Office Interior Design – Step 4

Yesterday’s challenge was about deciding what items in your home office you are going to display or hide away. Today, we get to focus on furniture! I want to be clear and say, in an architectural design office, we would really get a mood board together before making this decisions and decide on the exact pieces we would use to furnish a room (mainly because the furniture takes months to arrive!)

If you are purchasing furniture, make sure you are really clear on the delivery times, returns policies and any other cancellation policies for custom made items.  Even though the wall and floor colour go hand in hand with the furniture, the FFE (furniture, fittings & equipment) we put into the room usually live longer than the surroundings themselves.

My personal tips to furnishing your office space are:

  1. You may already have pieces of furniture that you want to use in your home office. If not, you could find something that you absolutely love and build your whole room around it. Usually, this would be the desk, shelving or storage unit or chair. Personally, if I didn’t have a piece that had been handed down to me or one of high quality, this is where I would invest.
  2. Your desk is probably the main space where you will work, but do you have another place where you can read comfortably, browse for ideas or work? You might not have room for a window seat or a gorgeous tub (or designer) chair, so think whether you can use a pouf or a dining room chair that may create a different space for you to undertake different activities. What could you use as a secondary space?
  3. Unfortunately it has to be said that, if you spend hours at your desk, you do have to take ergonomics into consideration. After years of working long hours in architectural offices, I am riddled with RSI after working in inappropriate work places for 16 hours or more a day. If you are going to be using your office space for really long periods of time, make sure you follow ergonomic rules. They don’t have to be geeky, although, currently, I have to admit, my ergo desk for 3D and drafting work are hidden behind a door…

Home Office Interior Design – Step 3

One of my most favourite things to design in an interior has to be storage. Ok, I understand most people aren’t as excited as me about this topic, although the importance of storage in the modern world is obvious, I have seen many people dismiss this and not see the actual value in how it can transform any room.

Step 2 to designing your dream home office space was about fighting the functional, where we try to imagine first, then make it work second – that’s the way to get the best result when designing.

For step 3, I am going to share one of my biggest design secrets with you. It’s not that much of a secret, but I use it as my go-to tool for storage every time. Hide what you don’t want to see and show off the rest!

My personal tips to help you design your storage are:

  1. Think about the whole space and know what you will be storing in this room. Are you storing files, books, stationary, electrics, painting equipment, canvases or audios. List the items you want to store in your home study area.
  2. Now decide on what you want to see and what you don’t want to see? In architecture and design, I find I have loads of gorgeous coffee table books and beautiful magazines, so I like to show these off. I tend to hide files, but that is a personal choice, because I want the feel of my own study to be bright, inspiring, professional and focussed. What items do you want to display and what items do you want to hide?
  3. Storage can be expensive! When on a budget, it usually means you have to become more creative. If mid century or shabby chic are your styles, you can use free or low cost reclaimed items creatively. For the rest of us, and those with expensive taste and who are not at the stage where they are able to invest in gorgeous hand made one off joinery pieces, my trick is to invest in the cheaper items such as folders & use these to either match the colour of the walls or shelving around to contrast or compliment the whole wall surface. This usually gives you a dramatic and fantastic result!
  4. If you already have existing joinery or storage in the room, try to repurpose it rather than replace it unless you have the funds to do so. Shelving, joinery and storage can be really expensive, so try to see if you can make what you have work for you, especially if money is tight.

When money is tight, invest in smaller things that make big impact.

I hope this has inspired you to think outside of the box when it comes to storage for your home office space. Ask yourself “what can I display in a creative way?”  What ordinary item can you make magnifique? Share your beautiful ideas with me, I would love to see them.

Home Office Interior Design – Step 2

Yesterday’s topic was quite an easy one, as most people are visual and their imagination is triggered by beautiful places and spaces. Today I’m asking you to get creative!

The next step to creating a gorgeous home office space that you love and want to spend time in, is to focus on the layout of your space. If you are stuck for ideas check out these on Pinterest: https://uk.pinterest.com/explore/home-office-layouts/ of just type home office into a google image search.

My personal tips for laying out a home office are the following:

  1. The space needs to be somewhere you feel comfortable. Some people like to be in a busy corner of the house, where they are surrounded by the buzz and others, (like me) need peace and quiet away from distractions when working. You probably already have a space for your home office, but today I want you to think outside of the box. Is this really the right place for me to work or study from?
  2. With computer screens being one of the main functional items in the study space these days, light control is even more important. Sitting somewhere bright but without direct sunlight is usually required. Do you have adequate light in this space, (I’m talking artificial as well as natural) and do you have enough light control? For example, your space can become useless at 3 pm when the afternoon sun is brightly shining into your computer screen. This can distract you from your work and make you less productive (and have to work longer!) Don’t put up with a less than perfect space. If you need to get some curtains, promise yourself to get them this weekend. If you need to move your desk to the other side of the room, then do it!
  3. I have found that instinctively you might locate your home office (usually not more than a desk) as close to power points as possible, and your might feel that you can’t move them because of the proximity to electricity. Unless you are lucky enough to have an electrician for a husband (its wonderful…), you will probably have to come up with some more creative ideas. These days you can hide trunking and cables in false skirting, behind panelling or go wireless. I tend to use switched multi-gang extension leads quite a lot in “temporary offices” the switches make things safer and a little more energy efficient. If you think you can’t move your desk to a better location, think again, just try to imagine it in the best possible space in your current home.
  4. Finally, when you are thinking about this space, really think about how you currently use it, how you want to be able to use it and also, if you weren’t bound by ‘this and that’, what would you really want your office to be like? Sometimes we tell ourselves that we can’t actually have a better space because we would get in someone’s way or that Most of us don’t have the luxury of taking a whole room for our office space but what is important is not to limit yourself. Think about it this way, this is your life, right now and in order to be the best boss, employee, entrepreneur, student or mum, you need to have a space where you can work efficiently, be inspired, present the best version of yourself and also enjoy it too!

What do you consider to be a creative layout? What would you dream of having or what would actually be the most beneficial layout to you right now? Get creative and share your pins, Instagram images or boards with me.

STEP 1 – BE INSPIRED, HAVE VISION AND DECIDE ON WHAT KIND OF  SPACE YOU WANT

Home Office Interior Design – Step 1

This is the first step in interior design to turn your home office into a gorgeous place that you will want to spend time in and work from. In these 7 steps, I’ll guide you through what you need to do to create a professional looking design and inspire you to take your home office from where it is now to where you wish it would be.

Why the home office?  This is one of the spaces we haven’t really had in a home throughout our history and it has started to creep into corners, kitchens, excess parts of rooms and hasn’t really been given the attention it deserves.

The home office or study space is now becoming one of the most used spaces in the home!  Studies now show that we spend more than 6 hours each day staring at screens (I know for me that figure is way too low!)  So why not give that space some attention, especially if you work from home or need a quiet space for reading or study.

The key to transforming any space is to have vision.  Whatever you are working on, today create a vision board or mood board and share it with me.  I’d love to see the vision you have for your space and what you are inspired by.

So the first step to decorating the perfect home office is to be inspired.  I get inspiration from nature, art, patterns, other designers, magazines and even the strangest things like shopping bags or machinery. I also have a crush on an architectural designer who works in LA called Kelly Wearstler.  Her interiors are divine and ostentatious and she uses lots of sculpted marble, which just seems so over the top, but adorable.
